To Eat Or Not To Eat

That is the question. While some(many) consider it wrong to be eating animals such as dogs and cats, others consider it to be a delicacy. Often, mixed reactions emerge among the group from discussions regarding the issue, ranging from utter disgust to an I-do-not-care manner, to an obsession for the dish.

First of all, people who argue that creatures such as dogs, cats, and indeed, dolphins and whales, should not be consumed because they are sentient beings that possess a degree of intelligence that surpasses their animal counterparts. Of course, it makes total sense to them. I mean come on, who wants to eat man's best friend, all cute and cuddly? Instead, let's all eat the daft people because they're, well, daft. If only laws weren't in the way, sigh.

Beware: Disturbing images ahead.

Another thing often mentioned is that creatures such as cows and chickens are domesticated and bred to become a source of food, hence the opinion that it is acceptable for them to be slaughtered and consumed to fulfill the needs of humans. This logic, from my perspective, suggests that these creatures are worse off when compared to, say, canines. Imagine living only to know that you're going to be slaughtered for food when you grow up. If you think about it, they don't even stand a fighting chance. This reminds me of The Matrix, where humans are farmed (albeit for energy) in bio-pods and machines govern earth like gods. Look at the bright side, no wars.

I do suppose one of the reasons peple behave that way is the all the good publicity animals like dogs and cats receive. The amount of Disney movies featuring dogs are simply astounding. Maybe they should feature a cow, much like the short story of 'Junid dan Pusaran' that all national secondary schools are obliged to read (and be tested on).

All in all, I guess the message being conveyed here is that all animal life is still life, no one should be able to decide what's edible and what's taboo for others, least of all scorned and rejected for having dog meat for dinner. That being said, I don't think eating pufferfish and scorpions is such a good idea either.

P.S: I finally finished 'The Historian', having read it over the course of a few weeks. Dracula is a nerd o_O

P.P.S: Tis' a sad day
